How to Find the Best Photo Shoot Locations

Darla Clarkson • Nov 17, 2023

Finding the right location for a photo shoot can significantly impact the quality and effectiveness of your final images. The choice of location sets the stage, providing a backdrop that can enhance the story within the photos.

Locations impact every type of photo from corporate headshots to family portraits, and even product advertisements. The environment’s aesthetics, lighting, and overall atmosphere all play crucial roles in conveying the emotion of the photo. A well-chosen location can elevate the visual appeal and meaning of a photograph. The surroundings add another level of depth and context to the subject matter.

Locations are an integral part of every good photo, but finding the perfect location really doesn’t have to be difficult. Locations drive some of the other decisions you will need to make, so it’s important to choose the right place. Here are a few questions to ask yourself before you decide on a location:

What kind of theme do I want?

This question serves as a guiding star. It helps you define the mood, style, and overall message of you want to convey through your photos. It’s essential to explore your local area for spots that align with your theme. Sometimes, the perfect location may be just around the corner.

If you find yourself uncertain about the backdrop that suits your vision, consider an afternoon drive around your city for inspiration or ask your photographer what locations they know that best suit your theme. Local photographers offer the experience to know what locations look and feel most like your desired theme. Their ideas can be invaluable in your search for the ideal location to bring your creative vision to life.

Am I allowed to take pictures there?

If the location isn’t public property or readily accessible to the public, obtaining permission is the first step. It’s essential to respect the legal and ethical boundaries associated with photography.

Many iconic landmarks and private properties have specific rules and regulations in place. Understanding and adhering to these guidelines is vital to prevent any potential legal complications. Taking the time to secure the necessary permissions, whether from property owners or relevant authorities, not only keeps you in compliance with the law, but also demonstrates professionalism and respect for the spaces you choose for your shoot.

It is a fundamental aspect of ensuring a successful, trouble-free, and ethical photography experience. Choosing your location in advance and planning for these factors will make for a more enjoyable shoot for you, creating more natural and relaxed photos.

Is it accessible?

Taking into account the level of accessibility when choosing a photoshoot location is a practical and safety-oriented step in the planning process. The accessibility of your selected site can significantly impact the enjoyment and safety of your session.

It’s crucial to remember that not all outdoor locations are available year-round. Some may be entirely inaccessible, depending on the season or geographical constraints.

Safety should be a top priority when deciding on a location. While the idea of capturing photos on a dramatic mountain ledge might be appealing, it’s essential not to compromise your safety. Look at the potential ease of reaching a location and the risks involved in planning a photo session there. This ensures that the chosen spot not only aligns with your creative vision, but also allows for a secure and well-prepared photoshoot.

How do I get to my location?

The logistics of reaching your chosen location can greatly impact the practicality of your photo session. An important consideration is whether it will be easy to access the location on foot. If not, you should plan for alternative arrangements for changing clothes and performing any needed hair and makeup touch-ups before and during the shoot.

It’s crucial to inquire about the availability of a nearby restroom facility to make the session smoother and more convenient. Planning ahead when it comes to these details related to accessibility and amenities makes for a more enjoyable shoot, as you won’t have to worry about them last minute. This ensures that you can comfortable and efficiently work at your selected location.

Will the photo session be in a public place?

The choice between public and private settings can significantly impact the dynamics of your session. When opting for a location with substantial foot traffic, it’s essential to reflect on your comfort level with being photographed in front of others. If this idea makes you uneasy, you may want to consider a location that is more private.

Public settings can often involve an audience of onlookers, and it’s crucial to align your choice with your comfort level to keep from negatively impacting your confidence or ease within the shoot. Make the choice that will create the best experience for you at the time of the session, and this will come through in the final photos.

On the other hand, private locations offer a more controlled and intimate atmosphere, providing more privacy and creative freedom. Therefore, the decision between a public or private location is a fundamental aspect to consider. It shapes both the practicality and the emotional aspects of your photography experience.

Above all else, make sure your location doesn’t become a distraction and that there is shelter nearby if you need it.

Choosing the perfect location isn’t just about aesthetics, but also practicality and storytelling. The location you choose can set the tone, enhance the message, and influence the ease of your session. Your location is an important part of your photographic narrative, so it’s well worth the effort to find a spot that resonates with your vision and message.
